The Insurance Considerations of Owning a Motorcycle

The Insurance Considerations of Owning a Motorcycle If you're thinking of buying a motorcycle, you've probably gone through the pros and cons. One benefit is certainly the fact that motorcycles save on your gas budget. But many people forget that you'll have to buy a motorcycle insurance policy too, which needs to be worked into the financial picture. Here are some facts to keep in mind while shopping for your new bike.

  • Size is a factor. You may dream of getting a big, loud motorcycle, but it will cost more to insure. The larger the engine the more expensive the premium is likely to be.
  • Certain brands may also cost more to insure. You're better off getting a bike with a well-known name than some exotic, rare bike. Why? Replacement parts are much cheaper and easier to procure for well-known brands.
  • Choose a higher deductible. In the event of an accident, you will have to pitch in more towards repair costs, but it will keep your premium amount lower every month.
  • If you own an older motorcycle, consider dropping comprehensive and/or collision coverage. This would leave you with the basic liability coverage and you wouldn't be reimbursed for repairs, but with many older bikes, it would cost more to repair the damage than the bike is worth—making collision and comprehensive coverage an unnecessary expense.
  • Take a motorcycle safety course. It's just a good idea all around. It’ll teach you how to be a better, safer driver, plus it can help you save money on your insurance.

If you're ready to hit the road, contact your independent insurance agent to get an accurate quote on a new motorcycle insurance policy. Don’t forget to ask about bundling your bike’s coverage with your homeowners insurance for a discount.

Protect your bike. Call HIS Insurance & Services at (800) 240-3654 for more information on Virginia motorcycle insurance.
