How Much Auto Insurance Do I Need In Virginia?

Virginia drivers must purchase minimum auto liability coverage amounts, and the state’s laws can change frequently. It’s crucial to work closely with your agent to get appropriate auto insurance coverage for your situation. This blog post is for informational purposes only.

Contact HIS Insurance & Services to learn more about getting auto insurance coverage that complies with Virginia laws.

What Are Virginia’s Minimum Liability Limits?

In Virginia, you must purchase minimum amounts of auto liability insurance or pay a fee to be able to purchase or renew your license plates. If you choose to pay the $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee to the Department of Motor Vehicles, you will be allowed to drive an uninsured vehicle at your own risk. But paying the fee doesn’t count as any form of insurance. So if you’re involved in an accident, you will incur the liability costs and may have to pay them out of pocket.  a blue car parked in a parking lot

If you choose to purchase coverage that satisfies the state’s minimum requirements, Virginia requires all drivers with a vehicle registered in the state to purchase the following coverage:

  • $30,000 for the injury or death of one person
  • $60,000 for the injury or death of two or more people
  • $20,000 for property damage

These limits apply to policies with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2022, through Dec. 31, 2024. Policies effective after Jan. 1, 2025, have higher coverage requirements. Virginia’s minimum liability requirements can change at any time and without warning.

What Other Auto Insurance Is Required in Virginia?

If you finance or lease a vehicle, your lienholder requires you to carry full coverage insurance, which may include comprehensive and collision coverage. This policy may help repair or replace your vehicle after a covered accident or incident.

Your lienholder may also require guaranteed asset protection (GAP) insurance. This coverage helps bridge the “gap” between your insurer’s settlement and the total payoff on your loan or lease if your vehicle is a total loss.

Depending on your situation, your agent may recommend that you tailor your auto insurance coverage to include the following policies and endorsements:

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
  • Rental reimbursement coverage
  • Medical payments (MedPay)
  • Replacement cost value (RCV) coverage
  • Towing coverage
