Should I Insure My ATV in Virginia

Riding an ATV through the beautiful trails of Virginia is an exhilarating experience that you might want to do every weekend. The wind on your face and the rush of whipping through the trails are fantastic. But, what happens if you fall or crash? Is your ATV insured? Riding ATVs can be risky, especially if more than one person is riding on it. You might not think that you need to insure your toy, but if you’re out-and-about on it every weekend, it is a good idea.

We don’t want to dwell on the bad side of owning an ATV, so we will make it brief: here are some facts according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

  • Since ATVs became available on the market in 1982, 226 Virginians have died from injuries they sustained while riding ATVs.
  • Of those, nearly 40 deaths were of youths aged 16 and younger.
  • Fifty-one of those deaths occurred between the years 2008 and 2011, a sharp increase over previous years.
  • Insurers pay millions of dollars each year to repair damage to property caused by ATVs in Virginia.

Even if you don’t have insurance for your ATV, Virginia does require all riders to follow specific rules.

 Virginia requires titling for ATVs of more than 50 cc’s purchased new on or after July 1, 2006.

All ATV riders must wear helmets.

No one under 16 may operate an ATV, except that children between the ages of 12 and 16 may operate ATVs of no more than 90 cc’s and children less than age 12 may operate ATVs of no more than 70 ccs.

The state prohibits passengers on ATVs not designed for passengers.

The state prohibits ATV use on public highways, except to cross those roads for agricultural purposes or while in Buchanan County.
