What You Need to Know
The most fundamental thing you should know about an SR-22 is that it is not an insurance policy. An SR-22 is a vehicle liability insurance document required by Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles for anyone with a high risk insurance policy. SR-22s are generally necessary for a driver to restore driving privileges after an uninsured car accident or traffic-related infraction like a DUI. If you are sentenced for driving without insurance, driving with a suspended license or driving under the influence, you may be obliged to have an SR-22 for three to five years. An SR-22 is only needed if a judge instructs you to acquire one and if you already have insurance you just need to add it to your policy. If you are uninsured, you must appraise an auto policy and SR-22.
An SR-22 is fairly affordable, yet there are still some costs included.

Keep in mind that an SR-22 is not forever. You can remove the file from your plan after you’ve had it for the three to five years required by the state. Once your SR-22 has been dismissed, your driving record will also be clear of the infractions that triggered the SR-22.
